It's not signature per se, but cookies or biscuits seem to have become a bit of an indicator that I've been in the kitchen. They're the easiest to transport once baked and I can turn out a big enough batch that wherever I go, there's plenty for everyone. I also love the degree of uniformity to a tray of cookies/biscuits when neatly lined up. Each an identical size and shape. I believe this is what makes them popular as everyone will experience the same taste.
Who is your favorite person to bake for and what do you make most for them?
It sounds a bit ridiculous, but the answer is myself. After an injury years ago, baking was a way of tracking progress in my recovery and a lesson in perseverance. It's now an escape for me and a chance to learn something new. I'm not happy until something looks and tastes good and I'll keep trying until I've figured that dish out. The great thing is that whatever I create? I get to share with others.
How would you use the $10,000?
There's no way to phrase this without sounding selfish. I'd spend it on myself. I'm not sure if I'd use the money to go to school for courses in pastry, or buy more baking sheets, supplies and see if I could start a small baked goods delivery business. Something like picking an item to bake and then selling whatever is made. I'd keep myself challenged by making new things. I've been told a few times that I could sell, and the prize money would be a great way to kick that idea off.
