My signature bake is my buttermilk sweet potato pound cake. It’s my most popular bake because it can be extremely versatile. You can eat it as is, you can put it in a frying pan with butter, top it with vanilla ice cream, and caramel sauce, or you can turn it into French toast. It combines two key desserts in Black culture - pound cake and sweet potato pie - and neither over powers the other. They exist in harmony.
Who is your favorite person to bake for and what do you make most for them?
My favorite people to bake for are my family and my students. For my family, I’m often making pies or cakes but for my students I let them choose what they would like. Being a college student away from home is hard so I try to provide my students with any small comfort I can and sometimes that’s just a sweet treat that reminds them of home.
How would you use the $10,000?
$10,000 would really give me some breathing room financially. Being a young professional is not easy. It would also provide me with the opportunity to increase my business and connect with more students.
