How do you make crumb cake even better? Add a layer of raspberry jam. This cake has a bit of a cult following with my friends, family, and customers. It’s soft vanilla cake, a generous layer of firm, buttery crumbs, and just the right balance of sweetness from the jam. The square shape makes it easy to cut and share — or keep all to yourself! It holds a special place in my heart, too, as it was one of my mom’s favorites.
Who is your favorite person to bake for and what do you make most for them?
I love when neighborhood kids come to my table with that look of pure excitement, ready to try whatever I’ve baked next. But my favorite person to bake for is my daughter. She loves most of what I make — and she’s my toughest critic. When she was seven, I made her a Wonder Woman-themed birthday cake and struggled with the decorating. She looked at it and said, “Mom, it’s not your best.” She’s fifteen now and still doesn’t mince words. Crumb cake is still her favorite!
How would you use the $10,000?
I’d invest in a dough sheeter — rolling dough evenly is my nemesis! I have too many fights with my rolling pin. Beyond equipment, giving back matters deeply to me. As a Girl Scout troop leader, I believe in teaching girls how to lead, whether it’s in the kitchen or the boardroom. I’d fund food- and business-related badges so girls can learn how to bake, build confidence, and understand what it takes to run a successful business.
